Description

Giving a home made gift that is appreciated for Christmas to friends, family and colleagues need not be expensive, nor too difficult or time-consuming. Using some basic preserving techniques, we make jars of tasty preserves for you to give away (or take home and enjoy for yourself!).

These techniques can be used on many fruit and vegies so that you learn to make your own preserves, with no artificial additives and nasty numbers. No preserving background is assumed as we go through how to prevent food spoilage using the different preserving methods. We discuss which jars and lids to use and the safe storage of the preserves.

The workshop is fully hands-on, where you ar.e involved in the processes from start to finish. The preserves made will be mainly with seasonal fruit and vegies and will include a savoury onion jam, cranberry chutney, some bottled dried fruits in brandied syrup and a delicious spicy pickle. Morning tea will include goodies made with homemade Christmas fruit mince and featuring tastings of some preserves.

All the preserves made on the day get taken home by everyone, as well as detailed recipes and a Preserving booklet, authored by Maria of My Green Garden. We will decorate the jars with labels and tags and you will be given a variety of different materials to make them really authentic.

The workshop starts at 10am and finishes at 1.30pm.

10 December 2017 • Preserving Basics: Making Preserves for Christmas

As with all of the My Green Garden classes, Maria's preliminary information was helpful to make the necessary preparations. The welcome was warm and hospitable, and the morning tea, as always, was delicious - enabling us to sample some of the preserves which we were in the process of making. It is always good to be able to be so 'hands-on' as part of a small class - to see how ingredients are selected and prepared, to see how to complete processes essential to the various preserving methods which we were using, to use various pieces of equipment available to help with preserving. I find this style of education - small class, hands-on, skilled and enthusiastic presenter - really so much better than just googling a recipe!

I loved the session. Maria imparts knowledge and tips in a relaxed and friendly environment. I learnt a lot, and had a great fun. Maria is incredibly generous and talented. The morning tea was beautiful. An inspiring way to learn, and make new friends. I will be booking again! Fiona James

05 December 2017 • Preserving Basics: Making Preserves for Christmas

This is a good class to learn about preserving. Straight forward, easy directions delivered in Maria's warm and welcoming style. Classes are small so there is lots of interaction and laughter with Maria and other participants and you end up with a load of preserves cooked, bottled and very prettily packaged in Christmas colours. A must do if you are looking for original home-made gift ideas. Another winner from Maria of My Green Garden.
